Jess Carter wins PFA Young Player of the Year

PFA Young Player of the Year, Jess Carter

Birmingham City Ladies defender Jess Carter has won the PFA Young Player of the Year in association with Sodexo at the PFA Awards in London.

Jess Carter’s phenomenal displays in Birmingham City’s back line earned the 19-year-old all the plaudits at her club’s award ceremony as well as a recent senior international call-up for England.

Having coped admirably with being thrown in at the deep end at the age of 16, making her senior debut for Birmingham City and winning Player of the Match award in 2013/14 Champions League quarter final against Arsenal, Jess Carter has gone from strength to strength.

Now 19 and a comparatively old hand at club level, she scooped a remarkable quadruple at Birmingham’s annual awards ceremony as she was named Manager’s Player, Players’ Player, Young Player and Supporters Club player of the season.

She is also making strides at international level where she scored on her debut for the England under-19s against Norway and represented the Lionesses at the under-20 World Cup in 2014.

Her performances have caught the attention of England coach Mark Sampson, who included Carter in his squad to face Italy and Austria in April.

Having been at the Blues since she was 13, she has recently signed an 18-month contract extension with the option of a further year.

She will be a key player for new Birmingham City manager Marc Skinner as he endeavours to take the club to the next level.

After an outstanding 2016 and start to 2017, the future is looking very bright indeed for one of England’s most promising young defenders.
