Chris Mitchell Foundation – A Night at the Races
The PFA are proud to support the Chris Mitchell Foundation which has been set up in memory of former Bradford City player Chris Mitchell, who sadly took his own life in May 2016 as a result of poor mental health.
A virtual horse race night marks the official launch of the Chris Mitchell Foundation and takes place on Saturday 2 September 2017 at Stirling County Rugby Club. The night will host a variety of fundraising activities including the races themselves, a raffle, an auction and guest speakers!
Chris played for various Scottish clubs during his career, including Falkirk, Queen of the South and Clyde, and also had a spell south of the border with Bradford City. A versatile player, who was comfortable at full back as well as in midfield, he represented his country several times at Under 21 level.
The Chris Mitchell Foundation is a newly formed charity, founded by Chris’ family and girlfriend. Together they wish to highlight the need for mental health and wellbeing awareness within Scottish professional football, and aim to give it a national platform.
Monies raised will be aimed at offering football clubs the opportunity to take positive steps towards safeguarding the mental health and wellbeing of their players and staff. This will be achieved by offering fully funded places for club representatives from the SPFL, Highland and Lowland Football League, Women’s Premier League and Youth Academies, to attend the NHS Scotland Mental Health First Aid Course. Course dates will be released shortly.
‘A Night at the Races’ will mark the beginning of the foundation’s journey and will aid a wide range of support services it hopes to fund going forward. The foundation has received a fantastic response to the event, with all 250 tickets sold out within a matter of days, which has been overwhelming for Chris’ family and friends.
Overall, it is hoped the evening will not only raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing in Scottish Professional Football, but also be an enjoyable evening for all attendees and will act as a benchmark for many future events.
